James Francis Skarda Jr. — My Grandfather
My grandfather, James “Jim” Skarda Jr., began our family’s professional legacy in the construction industry. In 1970, he founded J. F. Skarda Jr. Consulting Engineer, the firm now known as Skarda and Associates. What began as his independent structural engineering practice soon grew into a respected and service-oriented design firm.
By 1972, the company had expanded into Skarda and Rickert Structural Consultants. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, the firm remained at the forefront of structural engineering and building design, earning its reputation through practical expertise, dependable service and strong relationships with clients and construction professionals.
Although my grandfather retired in 1984, the company he founded continues to carry the Skarda name more than five decades later. His legacy established the first generation of our family’s work in construction and set a lasting example of professionalism, technical knowledge and pride in doing things the right way.
Jonathan “Jon” Skarda — My Father
My father, Jon Skarda, continued our family’s construction legacy when he and my mother, Kim, established Shore-Line Construction in 1994. Together, they built a respected Maryland construction company specializing in custom homes, waterfront construction and home improvements.
Over the years, my father has earned a reputation for his hands-on knowledge, careful attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship. His work has helped turn homeowners’ ideas into thoughtfully built homes, while his leadership has allowed Shore-Line Construction to remain a trusted name for more than three decades.
Growing up around my father and his projects gave me an early education that could never have come from a classroom alone. Watching him work taught me the importance of being dependable, taking ownership and standing behind everything you build. Those lessons continue to shape how I approach every customer, every project and the company I am building today.
How This Legacy Shaped Me
Growing up in a family of dedicated builders gave me a deep, hands-on understanding of construction that few others in the field possess. I didn't just learn the trade; I lived it, witnessing firsthand how technical knowledge and practical expertise come together to create lasting structures. This foundation propelled my success in the industry and ultimately inspired me to establish my own general contracting firm, carrying forward the Skarda name with pride.
Today, I am focusing primarily on exterior services, applying the same values of craftsmanship, reliability, and doing things the right way that defined my father's and grandfather's work. I believe that a home’s exterior is its first line of defense and its greatest statement, which is why I am committed to the highest standards of quality. My background isn't just a history—it’s a promise to every homeowner that I am a trustworthy partner, dedicated to protecting and improving your most valuable asset.
